Becoming A Summer Missionary

Job Description for Summer Missionaries
Summer missionaries will be assigned to the Tahoe City project. Supervisors for this project are Dan Holzer, Debbie Wohler, Nell Jackson, April Lay, and Sarah Johnson.

Required Activities
Summer missionaries will do the Big A Club. The Big A Club is held Tuesdays through Fridays from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

Every Friday night Parents’ Night Out will be held at the church from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.

A+ is held each Tuesday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. and from 2:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Missionaries will be assigned to the morning and afternoon sessions each week. This will be done on a rotation basis. If you are not assigned to afternoon A+ you will be assigned cleaning duties or other preparations for the Big A Club in the afternoon from 2:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. In other words, 2-5:30 p.m. are work times even if you don’t have afternoon A+.

Sunday afternoon and evening and all day Monday of each week is your day off.

Plan to be involved in some aspect of the Sunday morning worship. You will also be asked to help with Children’s Church, Sunday School, nursery, youth, or music. Sunday morning is work time. Try to talk with as many people as possible and be available to help as needed. Playground supervision on Sundays between 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. is a required activity. Check your Big A assignment sheet for your date.

Clean up of the building after Big A Club, PNO, and A+ are required activities. No mail will be delivered until the building is cleaned. (Motivation!) You must set up for PNO immediately following the Big A Club on Friday afternoon. No one is to leave or schedule anything until this is done. Cell phones will be given to the supervisor each morning. They will be returned at the end of each day.

Group devotions will be held Tuesdays through Fridays at 9:00 a.m. (for those not assigned to morning A+)

Each Saturday at 11:00 a.m. a staff meeting will be held. On Saturdays you will work on lesson plans for the following week and do your elective ministries. Lesson plans will be checked at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday evenings by one of the supervisors.

From time to time you may be asked to help with work projects.

Electives
We are offering the following electives to enhance your ministry in Tahoe City. These are optional. Please do not select more than one or two.

  • Youth Ministry. Only 2-3 missionaries will be allowed to choose this elective. All missionaries who are interested in this ministry must interview with Craig Smith.
  • Music Ministry/Drama Ministry
  • Beach Ministry
  • Special Friends
  • Alcoholics Anonymous/Narcotics Anonymous/ACOA/Al-Anon
  • Work on signs for ski ministry
  • Hospitality
  • Church Recreation/Fellowships
  • Clowning
  • Building Maintenance
  • College Ministry
  • Ministries can be designed to make use of your gifts

Housing And Food
The missionaries will be housed at the First Baptist Church of Tahoe City. There are two dorm rooms with bunk beds, which sleep 12 people. There are four showers, ten toilets, commercial kitchen, TV, VCR, DVD, washer, dryer, CD players, and 7 computers with high-speed Internet access. We also have wireless internet available. If you have a laptop you are welcome to bring it. There are CD players in each dorm room. Money will be provided for food. You will be responsible for buying and preparing your own food.

Transportation
The missionaries will be given the use of two seven passenger Toyota Siennas. We will pay for gas on all ministry related driving. You are responsible for putting gas in the vehicles when you use the vehicles for your own personal use. Before any missionary drives the car they must talk with Debbie about their driving history (accidents, tickets). Only 7 missionaries are to be in the car at once! Please consult the vehicle use schedule before taking the car anywhere. Obviously 11 people can’t go to different places at the same time. The car must be shared and communication of who needs the car and when is a must. Debbie or Nell must be made aware of any trips planned outside the Tahoe Basin.

TART, our local public bus, runs every half hour. That phone number is 530.581.6365. Please call for prices and information. Another option is to get to know some of our church people or Big A and A+ parents and go on outings and hikes with them. They have cars!

The 15 passenger vans cannot be driven without a Class B license. None of the vehicles should leave the church during 9-5:30 p.m. without the permission of Debbie or Nell. In other words, the ministry programs have the first preference over pleasure use.
